What is nosework?
Nosework is an engaging activity and sport for dogs based on their natural ability to detect scents. Dogs search for target scents in various environments: indoors, outdoors, in vehicles, and even among objects.
This discipline is inspired by the work of professional dogs, such as search and rescue, customs, and police dogs. However, nosework doesn’t require special skills or training; it’s suitable for any dog, regardless of breed, age, or physical abilities.
Nosework was introduced in 2006 in Southern California. Three professional dog trainers wanted to create an activity that:
- based on the natural instinct of the dog - smell
- available to everyone and easily implementable even at home.
- helps the dog become more confident and calm,
- strengthens the bond between a person and their pet.
Thus, a simple idea turned into an international movement. Today, nosework is practiced as a hobby and as an official sport in many countries.
